Weekend News Recap: Star Wars Legend, Kenny Baker, Passes Away at 81

Another week of pop culture has passed and here we are to get you all caught up on the biggest pop culture stories of this past week. In this Weekend News Recap, we talk about the passing of a Star Wars legend, some CW/DC news and Suicide Squad box office earnings.

Star Wars Actor, Kenny Baker Dies at 81

Actor Kenny Baker who is known for bringing life to the droid R2-D2 in the Star Wars films, passed away in his sleep Saturday morning. Starting in Star Wars: A New Hope all the way through to Revenge of the Sith, Baker sat inside of the lovable blue and silver droid who saved the day in quite a few of the films. The actor also played Paploo the ewok in Return of the Jedi and reprised his role for Artoo in The Star Wars Holiday Special. For a man that expected not to live  past his teenagers years, he sure did accomplish more than most in 83 years of life. May the Force be with you Kenny Baker.

Kevin Smith will Direct an Episode of Supergirl

After directing a great episode of The Flash, Kevin Smith is turning his directing chops to an upcoming episode of Supergirl. Kevin Smith announced on his podcast, Fatman on Batman, that the episode he will direct will be entitled Supergirl Lives, which is an interesting title that resonates with both Kevin Smith and some die-hard DC fans. The title refers to the Superman script that Smith wrote for Warner Bros. back in the late 90’s when the studio gave Smith a shot at penning a Superman film, which Smith titled Superman Lives. Though the script never made it to the directing chair, I’m sure Smith is more than delighted at having the opportunity.

Dolph Lundgren will Star in the Upcoming Season of Arrow

Sticking with the CW Network news, Rocky actor Dolph Lundgren will play the villain  in the upcoming season of Arrow and it’s another Russian villain. Lundren will be playing the role of Kovar aka Red Star, who is described by executive producer Wendy Mericle as a “super big badass guy who works for the Russian government.” We will get to see Kovar in action during flashback scenes.

Suicide Squad Remains at the Top on it’s Second Week

Despite overly harsh reviews from critics, DC’s Suicide Squad is still sitting strong at the top of the box office in it’s second week. Suicide Squad starring Margot Robbie, Will Smith and Viola Davis, earned $43.77M this past weekend beating out Seth Rogen’s Sausage Party (that sounds wrong) and Disney’s Pete’s Dragon, making the total gross for Suicide Squad $222.87M in just two weeks. Take that critics!
